The Violinist of Hameln is a side scrolling platform game developed by Enix for the Super Famicom console system, released the 29 september 1995 (SNES late years). The game is based on the manga created by Michiaki Watanabe where, to avoid a catastrophe, a young duo of adventurers is travelling far away from the Northern Capital with the magical help of music. The game is pretty enjoyable, same goes for the music, and it's easy to understand. I've finished the game on my first try and it was in japanese (!!!) but i still love to start it again thanks to the magical transformations that you can use to proceed during the game.
The story itself is pretty like the manga one, the cute and comical aspect of the main heroes is really funny: the game requires you to throw Flute (the little girl) and put her in various costumes in order to reach the end of the level. Numerous demons from the manga appear in the game as cruel bosses.
Throughout the game Hamel (the black violinist) will pick up numerous costumes that Flute will wear with a special ability:
Ostrich - Allows Flute to walk on spikes
Frog - When ridden Flute will jump very high
Robot - When jumped on will destroy blocks
Duck - Can swim across water and will dive when jumped on
Penguin - Can swim across water and will dash when jumped on
Monster - Used to trick a monster to let you across a bridge
Monkey - Will climb wall when ridden
Orangutan - Used to progress the story
Sunfish - Floats when ridden
Frisbee - Acts like a boomerang when thrown
Curling Puck - Slides when thrown
Elephant - Shoots water when jumped on
Octopus - Allows Hamel to move in any direction under water when ridden
UFO - Hovers and follows Hamel
Eagle - Flies in the direction Hamel is facing when ridden
